Tudor Griffiths Group Celebrates Third Place in Prestigious Quarries & Nature Photo Competition

Tudor Griffiths Group, a prominent player in the quarrying industry with sand and gravel quarries in Ellesmere, Shropshire, and Cefn Graianiog and Pen Y Groes, Gwynedd, proudly announces its third-place victory in the renowned biennial “Quarries & Nature Photo Competition” organised by the Mineral Products Association (MPA). This nationwide competition showcases the diverse and flourishing wildlife found in and around active and restored quarries, emphasising the significant contribution of the quarrying industry to nature recovery and biodiversity gain in the UK.

Stuart Lawrence of Tudor Griffiths Group, clinched the third prize in the employees’ section of the competition. Stuart’s photograph of an Oystercatcher captured within the Ellesmere quarrying environment, standing out among a record number of entries.

The exclusive viewing of the winning entries took place on Tuesday, 28th November, at The Royal Society in London. Esteemed guests, including leading conservationists, policymakers, MPA member companies, and the winning photographers, were in attendance. RSPB Chief Executive Beccy Speight presented the prizes, commending the exceptional quality of the images and the competition’s role in highlighting the importance of restored quarries in supporting nature recovery.

Beccy Speight, RSPB Chief Executive, commented on the ability of mineral sites to leave a lasting legacy, stating, “We have long known how important the role of restored quarries can be in helping nature recover, and photography is a wonderful way of bringing this to light. The quality of the images in the competition is outstanding – congratulations to all taking part.”

Mark Russell, MPA Executive Director for Planning & Mineral Resources, highlighted the significant impact of quarry restoration on nature conservation and biodiversity gain. He stated, “More new areas of nature conservation and biodiversity gain have been and continue to be created through quarry restoration than any other industrial activity.” By the end of 2021, MPA members had already created over 8,300 hectares of new priority habitat, with an additional 11,000 hectares in the pipeline.

This year’s competition saw a record number of entries, and the judging panel faced the challenging task of selecting winners based on criteria such as composition, relevance, setting, and the difficulty of capturing the image. The competition features two categories: one for MPA member company employees and contractors and another for the thousands of volunteers who contribute to the restoration of quarry sites, transforming them into nature reserves, country parks, and sites of special scientific interest.

Tudor Griffiths Group extends its gratitude to the Mineral Products Association and the judging panel for recognising Stuart Lawrence’s exceptional contribution to capturing the beauty of nature within the quarrying industry. The Group remains dedicated to contributing to the positive impact of quarry restoration on biodiversity and nature conservation.
