200 Years of Portland Cement

Back to News

TG Concrete is proud to join the UK cement industry in celebrating a remarkable milestone—the bicentenary of Portland cement, the revolutionary material that has shaped the modern world.

Two hundred years ago, in October 1824, Joseph Aspdin, an English bricklayer, businessman, inventor, and stonemason, was granted the patent for Portland cement in Leeds. His groundbreaking invention set the UK—and the world—on a new construction journey, enabling the creation of homes, schools, hospitals, workplaces, and the vital infrastructure that underpins daily life.

200 Years of Building the Future
Cement has been at the heart of construction for two centuries, providing the foundation for countless projects, from roads and railways to ports and clean water systems. As the binding agent in concrete, cement has enabled the creation of safe, durable, and versatile structures that form the backbone of modern society.

Today, concrete is the most consumed man-made material on Earth. Known as “liquid rock,” concrete can be poured and moulded into any shape, making it one of the most adaptable materials in existence.

What began with a single cement factory in Wakefield has grown into a global industry. There are now over 3,500 cement plants worldwide, with cement continuing to play a crucial role in shaping the buildings and infrastructure we rely on every day.

Celebrating a Legacy of Innovation
TG Concrete is proud to be part of this incredible legacy, honouring two centuries of progress and innovation. Joseph Aspdin’s invention in Leeds revolutionised construction, enabling the development of structures and systems that have improved lives across the globe.

As we celebrate 200 years of Portland cement, TG Concrete reflects on the transformative impact of this material and looks forward to continuing its role in supporting communities, businesses, and infrastructure for generations to come.
